Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital is a 110 bed acute rehabilitation hospital located in Worcester, MA. We provide comprehensive Inpatient rehabilitative care for orthopedic, neurologic, multi-trauma, brain injury, stroke, pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation needs.

We provide hospital level medical care through our skilled Nurses, Therapists, Pharmacists and Medical staff to consistently offer the best possible outcomes for our patients.  With an average length of stay between 1-3 weeks, we have the ability to get to know our patients and their families. The Health Information Management System (HIMS) Coder codes diagnoses and procedures as documented in each patient medical record according to ICD-10-CM classification system, and assigns the impairment and CMS 13 group codes.  The position extracts information from the medical record, enters into PATCOM and UDS Proware, and establishes an accurate and comprehensive database all within the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards, professional and regulatory agency guidelines, Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS) guidelines and company policies.



- Ensures coding, impairment group, and CMS 13 assignments are accurate and follow guidelines.

- Gathers/compiles/enters data from medical records for appropriate and optimal reimbursement/charges.

- Sequences the diagnoses and procedures using coding guidelines.

- Completes an IRF-PAI for all applicable inpatient admissions.

- Monitors and corrects errors on the Work Queue Bill Hold Report.

- Navigates intranet and internet for information needs.

- Ensures confidentiality of patient information and provides releases in accordance with regulations.

- Organizes, plans, and manages time effectively to complete assignments.

- Completes mandatory training and courses requried by completion date.

- Transmits IRF-PAI data to CMS.

- Print previous day's CMS IRF-PAI Facility Final Validation Report.

- Occasional auditting for Monthly Compliance.

License or Certification:

- RHIA or RHIT or CCS preferred

Minimum Qualifications:

- Graduate of accredited Health Information Technology or Administration Program OR completion of AHIMA Independent Study Program or completion of advanced coding classes in ICD-10-CM at an accredited college or vocational school preferred.

Machines, Equipment Used:

- General office equipment such as computer/laptop, telephone, copy / fax machine, calculator, scanner.

- Microsoft Office software, to include Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Physical Requirements:

- Visual acuity, speech recognition, speech clarity.

- Ability to lift, lower, push, pull, and retrieve objects weighing a minimum of 30 pounds.

- Ability to sit 90 percent of the time.

- Ability to demonstrate safe retrieval skills from above head to floor level with objects up to ten pounds.

Skills and Abilities:

- Ability to coordinate, analyze, observe, make decisions, and meet deadlines in a detail-oriented manner.
